Scenic Walks & Viewpoints

In Petrópolis, the mountains are never far away.

Sometimes they appear at the end of a quiet street.
Sometimes above a park or a short path where the landscape suddenly opens.

These scenic walks and viewpoints offer an easy way to experience the Serra — short routes, open views and quiet places where the rhythm naturally slows.

Many of these spots can be discovered naturally during cultural walks through the city, where nature and urban life meet.

Trono de Fátima

Urban viewpoint

One of the most iconic viewpoints in Petrópolis.

A short climb leads to a hilltop monument where the city opens below, framed by the surrounding mountains. From here, the geography of Petrópolis becomes clear — valleys, forested slopes and historic rooftops among the peaks of the Serra.

A quiet stop during an urban walk.

Walk: short uphill path
Typical visit: 30–45 minutes

Parque Natural Municipal de Petrópolis

Forest within the city

Located close to the historic center, this protected park preserves a stretch of Atlantic Forest within the urban landscape.

Short trails move through native forest and small clearings where the surrounding mountains appear between the trees. The atmosphere is calm, with birds, shade and the feeling of stepping into the forest just minutes from the city.

Walk: light forest trails
Typical visit: 1–2 hours

Parque Cremerie

Garden park with mountain views

A beloved local park where the city softens into open green space.

Walking paths circle lawns and gardens with the mountains rising quietly in the background. It is a pleasant place for a slow walk, especially in the late afternoon.

Walk: easy park stroll
Typical visit: 45–90 minutes

Parque São Vicente

Hang-gliding viewpoint

A quiet park located in one of the hillside neighborhoods of Petrópolis.

A short path leads to a hang-gliding launch ramp where the landscape suddenly opens toward the distance. From here, the view stretches across mountain valleys and, on clear days, reaches all the way to the coastline and the city of Rio de Janeiro.

Occasionally, hang gliders launch from the ramp and drift silently over the valleys below.

Walk: short park path
Typical visit: 20–40 minutes

Lago Quitandinha

Scenic lakeside walk

Few places in Petrópolis combine architecture and landscape as naturally as Quitandinha.

A walk around the lake reveals changing views of the palace, its reflection on the water and the mountains rising behind it. The surrounding gardens and lakeside paths create a relaxed scenic walk.

Walk: easy lakeside stroll
Typical visit: 30–60 minute

Parque de Itaipava

Open park in the mountain district

Located in the district of Itaipava, this large park reflects the relaxed rhythm of the area.

Wide lawns, shaded paths and views of the surrounding hills make it a pleasant place for a gentle walk before or after lunch in Itaipava.

Walk: flat and easy
Typical visit: 30–60 minutes

Why we like it

The city was built among mountains, and the landscape is always present — sometimes dramatic, sometimes subtle.

A short walk, a hilltop pause or a quiet park overlooking the valley often becomes the most memorable encounter with the Serra.
